Oh hey! I'm Niven. Welcome.
Balance In Bridgetown is a lifestyle blog, focused on living your best life, in Portland (hence the bridge). I talk all things including brunch, books, coffee, doodles and travel. I like to live what I call a life of non-conformity... a life of intention, adventure, fun and gratitude... all while working a corporate job. It may sound a bit strange, but I've found a way to make it all work!
If you don’t know what “living a life of non-conformity means - check out my favorite book:The Art of Non-Conformity by Chris Guillebeau
Most of what you'll see on here are the in's and out's of my life and my attempts at "adulting". I think I've got a decent grasp on it... but let's be real, I'm always learning and figuring things out just like everyone else.
If you love pop culture, are looking for a good brunch or coffee spot, or your next read, I hope you stick around. I've got a whole lot of that and a few other things thrown in around here. And if you have any suggestions for blog posts or ideas, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm all for trying out new things.
And now a bit about me…
I was born and raised in Portland, living in a suburb outside of the city. I have never seen a reason to want to leave Portland, except to travel and see the world. Being in the hub of the pacific northwest has always been a blessing, and quite frankly, you won't find the greenery, the food or coffee, or culture anywhere else.
I have a deep and everlasting relationship with coffee. Whether I'm going for the caffeine or its just the taste and flavor, I'm all over it. You'll find many coffee related moments on this blog, and no doubt, I'll keep my list of coffee shop favorites up to date!
I’ve got two partner’s in crime - my husband and dog. If you ask my husband, he’s not sure who I love more. Let’s just say it’s even. You'll see plenty of Josha (my husband) and Gus Gus around here. Most of my adventures include one or both of them.
I’ve got the best family in the entire world… there’s really not much more I could say that encapsulates them better than that! They're my sounding board, my best friends and some of my favorite people to spend a day doing nothing with, or going on an epic travel adventure with.
Per my personal hobbies, I watch ALL the TV. I take watching TV as a serious hobby and it’s one of my favorite past times. I particularly love historical fiction TV, both adult and YA drama series and 90's teen sitcoms and drama, but not necessarily in that order.
Similarly, I LOVE books. I try to read between 40-50 books a year. I took a goal to read 50 books in 2015 and it was a success, and I've been trending generally that direction since. I recently just got my first Kindle, and it's changed the way I read, and what I read. Highly recommend.
Traveling is one of my dreams, passions and hobbies. I strive to visit one new international and domestic city every year - I’ve been going strong on that commitment since 2012. If you're looking for suggestions on where to go, or what to eat in a city I've been to, I'll happily talk about it. And if you're looking for someone to hang with on a trip, there is a running joke in our family to "not invite us, because we'll likely show up".
I'm of Indian decent, if you couldn't tell by my name or brown skin. I love my culture, the clothes, the food and going to and being in India. I’m one of the lucky few, who get to celebrate and incorporate the best of both cultures, being American and Indian, and as a result, that tends to be a consistent theme in my life. You'll see if in the form of photos, recipes, and trip posts!
And lastly, I love my job. I'm a community manager for a Fortune 500 company and have a lot of fun doing what I do. While I strive to live a life of nonconformity in all the other aspects of my life - I can’t complain about my 9-5. It’s pretty damn great.
Want to know more? Just ask! I am an open book.
